Medtronic VersaStep Insufflation/Access Needle
VS150000
The insufflation/access needle used to establish pneumoperitoneum is a 14 gauge stainless steel needle with a hub near the proximal end for interface with the radially expandable sleeve. There is a spring loaded blunt stylet inside the needle and extending beyond the tip of the needle. The stylet retracts as the needle is pushed against tissue and automatically advances after the cavity has been penetrated. A stopcock at the proximal end of the needle controls flow of insufflation gas. The same insufflation/access needle is reusable with additional VersaStep™ Plus radially expandable sleeves for all access ports during one patient procedure (be sure to check needle function between uses).
AccessGUDID Info
- FDA Product Code: GCJ
- FDA Product Code Name: Laparoscope, general & plastic surgery
- GMDN Term Code: 37151
- GMDN Term Name: Laparoscopic access cannula dilator
- GMDN Term Description: A hollow dilator with a tapered distal end intended to enable the gentle insertion of a larger laparoscopic access cannula, necessary when significantly increasing the working access port's lumen, e.g., from 10 to 20 mm diameter. It is commonly used in minimally-invasive laparoscopic procedures. The dilator is entered over a guide rod, forcing a larger opening as the skin is pressed aside, thereby reducing the possible degree of damage. This is a reusable device.
Manufacturer
Covidien’s AutoSuture business now resides within Medtronic’s Surgical Operating Unit, under the Medical Surgical Portfolio. This group is focused on delivering advanced technologies for minimally invasive surgery, with a deep legacy in surgical stapling, energy devices, and laparoscopic instrumentation.
Key products from the former AutoSuture line include:
- Endo GIA™ staplers and reloads – a flagship line of linear cutting staplers used in a variety of laparoscopic and open procedures.
- Signia™ – a powered stapling platform offering real-time feedback and adaptive firing technology.
- LigaSure™ – a trusted vessel sealing system for tissue fusion and hemostasis.
- VersaOne™ trocars – for secure and versatile access during minimally invasive surgery.
- Sonicision™ – cordless ultrasonic dissection tools that combine energy and precision.
These technologies form the backbone of Medtronic’s minimally invasive surgical portfolio, originally developed under the AutoSuture brand by U.S. Surgical Corporation, then acquired by Tyco Healthcare, which later became Covidienbefore merging with Medtronic in 2015. Today, Medtronic continues to build on this heritage, delivering solutions that enhance efficiency, precision, and outcomes in the operating room.
