- FDA Product Code: GAL
- FDA Product Code Name: SUTURE, ABSORBABLE, NATURAL
- GMDN Term Code: 13898
- GMDN Term Name: Catgut suture, plain
- GMDN Term Description: A single-strand (monofilament), natural, bioabsorbable thread composed mostly of collagen fibres derived from mammals (e.g., sheep or bovine intestines) intended to join (i.e., approximate) the edges of a soft-tissue wound or incision by stitching or to ligate soft tissues; it may include an attached disposable device(s) [e.g., needle, passer] intended to facilitate suture application. The thread provides temporary wound support, until the wound sufficiently heals to withstand normal stress, and is subsequently absorbed by enzymatic degradation. This is a single-use device.
More on Plain Gut
Surgical gut suture is an absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from either the serosal layer of beef (bovine) or the submucosal fibrous layer of sheep (ovine) intestines. Surgical gut sutures are available in plain or chromic. Chromic gut is processed to provide greater resistance to absorption.
Surgical gut suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures, but not for use in cardiovascular and neurological tissues.
