Hologic Brevera Breast Biopsy System
The Brevera biopsy needle is a single-use, disposable device. It connects to a reusable device driver, which then interfaces with the biopsy console. The needle consists of a hollow outer cannula with a side aperture and a sharpened inner cannula. When attached to the Brevera breast biopsy system, the inner cannula rotates and extends across the aperture to collect targeted tissue.
The device driver houses the mechanical and electrical components that control needle rotation and advancement. During the biopsy, a vacuum draws tissue into the aperture. The inner cannula then advances and rotates to cut the tissue. Once collected, the tissue sample is aspirated through a tubing line into a tissue filter. Saline is also delivered through the biopsy system to flush the cavity and help transport the sample to the filter.
